전시주제 : 흐르는 것은 멈추길 거부한다

아시아는 제국주의 패권에 의해 식민으로서 근대를 맞이한 아픔을 갖고 있으며, 현대화의 과정은 급물살처럼 격동했다. 이러한 소용돌이 속에서 우리는 자신을 간과하고 제대로 들여다본 적이 없었다. 이런 와중에도 아시아 현대미술은 서구의 모더니즘적 사고에 기대고 있지만 다른 궤적을 그리며 변화하고 성장해 왔다. 시나브로 이제는 강력한 힘이 생겼고 이미 수많은 스타일의 작품이 존재한다.

 

<흐르는 것은 멈추길 거부한다> 展은 아시아의 근현대 과정에서 감당해야 했던 역사적 상처를 들추고, 고백하고, 치유함으로써 더 나은 세상을 향한 미술적 발언들이다. 서구 중심의 수직적인 거대 담론을 넘어선 동시대 아시아 미술의 역동성과 가치를 녹여낸 것이다. ‘이제는 강력한 힘이 생겼고, 강력한 힘을 발휘하고 있다’는 자각에서 출발한 기획전이다. 이는 저마다의 처지를 인정하면서 다양하게 분출하는 아시아 현대미술의 힘으로 더 나은 세상을 향해 희망찬 걸음을 내딛고자 하는 의도이다.

 

모더니즘의 종말 이후, 서구미술이 갖는 메커니즘에 대한 일방적 추종은 더는 고려 대상이 아니다. 지금은 타자에 의해 정의된, 혹은 타자로서의 아시아가 아니라 자신감을 갖고 당차게 우리를 드러내면서 ‘자기 정의’에 집중할 것을 제안한다. 

 

‘흐르는 것’은 거대한 역사적·사회적·개인적 의식이나 무의식을 관통하는 ‘변화’의 은유적 표현이다.

 

 

Exhibition Theme: Flowing Refuses to Stop.

 

Asia has suffered from modernization as a colony due to imperialist hegemony, and the process of modernization was turbulent like a rapid current. In this vortex, we overlooked ourselves and never really looked into ourselves. In the midst of this, Asian contemporary art has been changing and growing while drawing a different trajectory, depending on Western modernist thinking. Asian Contemporary Art has now become a powerful force, and there are already numerous styles of works.

 

<The Flowing Refuses to Stop> is an exhibition includes artistic remarks for a better world by uncovering, confessing, and healing the historical wounds that we had to endure in the modern and contemporary process of Asia. It melts away the dynamism and value of contemporary Asian art that transcends the large, vertical discourse centered on the West. This is a special exhibition that started from the realization that ‘now we have a strong power, and we are demonstrating a strong power’. It is intended to take a hopeful step toward a better world with the power of Asian contemporary art, which erupts in various ways while acknowledging each person's situation.

 

After the end of modernism, unilateral follow-up to the mechanism of Western art is no longer a consideration. For now, we suggest that we focus on 'self-definition', revealing ourselves with confidence, not Asia as defined by others or as others.
